Prescribing Drugs for Autism Treatment May Cause Additional Issues

When a child is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), many doctors will prescribe certain drugs to deal with related symptoms, such as aggression, self-injury, or depression.

These medications can help ease those symptoms — but they can’t treat the core symptoms of autism.

In fact, while dozens of medicines have gone through hundreds of clinical trials, no drug is FDA-approved to treat the core symptoms of ASD:

  • communication difficulties
  • social challenges
  • repetitive behavior

Plus, many of the drugs doctors have available to them to treat autism-related symptoms can come with additional problems.

That’s why we’re so proud to offer an alternative approach here at the Brain Treatment Center of Carlsbad: MeRT or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy.

This drug-free, non-invasive, gentle treatment can help your child develop skills to function better in life — including improving their communication and social skills.*

Complications Can Arise from Drugs Used in Autism Treatment. But an Alternative Exists!

While no drug can directly treat the core characteristics of autism, many drugs can ease other symptoms, such as:

  • ADHD
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • irritability
  • self-injury

Doctors may prescribe stimulants to improve focus, for example. They can also prescribe antidepressants like SSRIs for depression and anxiety.

Currently, the FDA has only approved two drugs to deal specifically with one effect of autism: irritability. These are the antipsychotics risperidone and aripiprazole. Often, they are vital for children on the spectrum who tend toward aggression or self-injury.

However, each of these drugs — stimulants, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and more — comes with side effects. And doctors may prescribe additional drugs to deal with the symptoms of those side effects. That can cause a child to be on an overwhelming cocktail of drugs.

Then there’s the issue of parents seeing multiple doctors to try to get the results they’re looking for. Each doctor may prescribe a different drug or series of drugs to deal with the same symptoms. And sometimes, a child can end up taking these new drugs without stopping the drugs they’re currently on.

You get the picture: It can be a huge issue, particularly for children on the spectrum — and those who love and care for them. It can be incredibly painful to keep trying new medications, only to see no measurable improvement.

That’s why MeRT can seem like such a miracle* for parents with children on the spectrum, like this mother:

We tried a lot of treatments. But this one — it’s almost like you get immediate effects. After the first week, it was like she was asleep, and now she’s awake. She’s rediscovering the world, she’s looking at things differently, and she’s learning everything.”

MeRT: Drug-free, State-of-the-art Autism Treatment in Carlsbad

MeRT is a breakthrough in treating autism. As we’ve mentioned, it’s drug-free, non-invasive, and gentle. And MeRT isn’t a cookie-cutter treatment. Rather, we address your child’s unique brain.

Using detailed and sophisticated brain scans, we can “see” wavelengths in the brain that are missing.

We then create a customized magnetic stimulation treatment (TMS) to stimulate those areas. This can open up unused neural pathways and improve brain processing.

This can cause a dramatic improvement in communication, awareness, and mood. Information will be less overwhelming for your child.

They may have a better understanding of the correct order or sequence of things. And they can become calmer, more relaxed, open, and aware of their environment.*
